The Blackfoot River in Montana is a gem for fly fishing enthusiasts. Prior to the 1992 release of the movie “A River Runs Through It,” the Blackfoot River wasn’t well known by out-of-state anglers. Today, it’s one of Montana’s more popular rivers, attracting visitors and locals alike.
This self-guided tour focuses on the Upper Blackfoot, and is perfect walk and wade water for hot summer days -- especially when most of the Blackfoot is subject to “Hoot Owl” closures and restrictions. The upper river stays colder, it's smaller and the fly fishing pressure isn’t as intense.
Unlike many rivers, you don’t have a lot of fishing access from the road due to private property, and much of this upper section fishes poorly. However, the hot spots I point you to within the FinnMap will take you to spots that offer incredible fishing, get less pressure, and can handle you and your friends easily. You’ll work a little harder and walk a little farther than others, but you’ll have much better luck (30+ fish days!) and an overall better wilderness experience.
This guide will show you specific coordinates to where the best parking and fishing spots are and how to reach them, and even recommended camping. I'll tell you where to camp, where to fish, where to park, what you'll catch, and how to have the best multi-day fly fishing vacation!
Here's what you get with each purchase.
